A Special Father’s Day Story
This Father’s Day is a special one for me. As I write, my wife and I are deep in our fifth month of pregnancy and anxiously awaiting the arrival of our son or daughter. So, I guess you could say that this is my first official Father’s Day celebration as a father.
With the prospect of fatherhood has come a range of emotions. There’s excitement, waiting for the day when I can see my baby for the first time (without the use of a sonogram, that is). There’s nervousness, wondering what type of father I will become. There’s fear, as I think about all the worst-case scenarios regarding the pregnancy. But most of all, there’s a great sense of responsibility, knowing that you will have the power to shape another human being’s life for better or worse.
Growing up in Baltimore City, I’ve seen the effects of growing up without a father. Though my parents have been married for 28 years and my father has been present in my life, many of my friends and family members have not had the same luxury. I’ve seen young women jump into bed with the first man who shows her affection because of the lack of a father in the home. I’ve seen how young men get jumped into gangs, searching for the love of their absentee fathers. In short, many of the problems facing our youth and our society as a whole stem from the lack of male leadership in the home.
And that is why I feel such a great sense of responsibility. In a society whose feminism teaches us that men are expendable, whose statistics teaches us that men are not dependable, and whose popular culture teaches us that men are bumbling idiots (see The Simpsons), the fact of the matter is that absolutely nothingcan replace the power of a strong male presence in the life of a young person. A father’s love has the power to heal wounds, to protect from harm, and to provide a sense that the world’s opportunities are limitless for our young people. So, whether you are a father who plays an active role in the life of your son or daughter, a man who has volunteered to take on the role of daddy, or an expectant father like me, I honor you today for the responsibility you’ve taken on and the tremendous work you’re doing to make the world a better place in which my son or daughter will grow up.
God bless you all!

Women Are Getting It Done!
Doing what you ask? What else but building Habitat for Humanity homes. I had the honor of photographing a Women’s Build Day on May 7 on Fairmount Avenue in East Baltimore. National Women’s Build week kicked off on April 30, 2011 and ended on May 8, 2011. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake was there to provide some words of encouragement to the women and help kick off this special build. All women crews put on their hard
hats and picked up hammers and construction tools to build a beautiful home for a deserving family. Crews will continue to work on this house four days a week, and in approximately 6 months, the keys for this renovated home will be handed over to the new homeowners in a dedication ceremony. It was great to see all the enthusiasm and hard work from the women’s team and I found it quite amazing that in a matter of a few hours during the morning that this magnificent crew was able to tear down walls (very colorful walls), pull out plumbing fixtures, take down cabinets, remove carpets, and nearly fill a large dumpster! I met Mia while at the build and received a tour of her beautiful Habitat for Humanity home, just one block away from this build; she is a proud homeowner and I have to tell you it really shows. The work done by Habitat for Humanity volunteers allows families who would not normally be able to afford a home the opportunity to raise their families in a safe environment and capture a piece of the American dream. Rebuilding these communities is a win-win for everyone!
